English scholar and writer. Fellow and tutor at Oxford from 1925-54, and professor of English at Cambridge from 1954-63. Lewis answers the philosophical question “What makes a man great?” and complies with a request for his autograph. In full: “The question is obscure. Are you asking for a definition of greatness? Or for an empirical assessment. Just as heredity, education, etc….of various great men. Anyway, I don’t know the answer to either question, but here is the autograph.” In fine condition, with a bisecting vertical fold, date of “1-11-63” written beside Lewis’ response in another hand, a few light creases. R&R COA.
