Description

'I thank you for your interest in the theatrical performance rights in my novel 'Gone With The Wind,' but I regret that I must reply that I do not wish to sell the theatrical rights at this time.'

Author who wrote only one novel - the classic and immensely popular Gone With the Wind - a best-seller which won her the 1937 Pulitzer Prize and became one of the most popular films of all time. She was killed prematurely by a speeding car which struck her as she was crossing a street with her husband. TLS signed 'Margaret Mitchell Marsh,' one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, June 17, 1940. Letter to a Mr. Szecsi regarding the sale of theatrical rights for Gone With The Wind. In part, 'Your letter has been forwarded to me by the Macmillan Company of New York. I thank you for your interest in the theatrical performance rights in my novel 'Gone With The Wind,' but I regret that I must reply that I do not wish to sell the theatrical rights at this time. The war in Europe has caused so many disturbances I believe it would be advisable to delay negotiations of this sort until affairs are on a more stable basis. In addition, I would not wish to have a dramatization made of my novel without my personal approval of the dramatization, and I would not be able to undertake this at the present time because of a recent severe illness from which I am just recovering. So, I must ask you to wait a while.' Expected mailing folds, and some scattered light wrinkling and toning spots, otherwise fine condition. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
