Pseudonym of Marie L. de la Ramee, British novelist who wrote tales of fashionable life, animal and children's stories. An unsigned, but poignant and dramatic letter from the author of 'A Dog of Flanders.' Four pages, 8 sides, 6 x 8 pale blue stationery, May 25, early 1890s. The letter was perhaps written to a publisher or patron and reads, in part: ' I send you the first sheets of two stories one of which 'The Ingrate' is I think the finest thing I ever wrote.' The remainder of the letter is a plea for money. 'As you are such an admirer of literature and are going to build a marble temple to Pallas Athene would you spare me a little money? If you could lend me 400 pounds for three years you would save me from an anxiety and torment which destroy my intelligence and my peace and make me miserable. Will you help me?' In fine condition, with light show through to all pages, a separation to one fold. RRAuction COA.
