Description

"I have no further worries about the Expedition debt"

TLS signed “R. E. Byrd,” one page, 8.5 x 11, 9 Brimmer Street letterhead, December 31, 1935. Letter to Arthur A. Zuhn, a physicist with the Byrd Antarctic Expedition of 1933-35, in part: "I am starting out again on my lecture tour the first part of next month provided I get an Okay from my physician, which I think I will. Unfortunately I will be gone from Boston for about three months, and will be out on the West Coast part of the time. Because I was able to keep working (which was very doubtful for many months following my return) I have no further worries about the Expedition debt. I still owe $38,000, but have a few thousand in the bank against that amount, and expect to pay it all up next year. When this tour is finished, I will have a lot more time to attend to details, and if any of our men are without positions at that time, I will have an opportunity to do some personal soliciting. The great majority of Expedition members, I am glad to say, are getting along satisfactorily. Our book, Discovery, has had excellent reviews, but I am afraid it will not sell as well as hoped until it is discovered that it is not a repetition of my first Antarctic book, Little America." Byrd adds a brief handwritten postscript: "How are you?" In fine condition, with two small stains to the top edge.
