English statesman (1732-1818) who became the first de facto Governor-General of India from 1773 to 1785. He was accused of corruption and impeached in 1787, but after a long trial he was acquitted in 1795. LS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.25 x 8.75, March 24, 1782. Letter from Alipore while serving as Governor-General of the Presidency of Fort William (Bengal), in part: "I thank you for the Intelligence which you have been so obliging as to send me, and which I am inclined to credit as I had before heard it from one or two Gentleman who had carefully examined the man who brought it. I shall have great pleasure in contributing to the Ease or Convenience of your Journey by any means in my power, and shall not fail to give the necessary Directions for accommodating you both."
