Description

British ambassador to the Kingdom of Naples, antiquarian, archaeologist, and vulcanologist who studied Mount Vesuvius (1731-1803), though perhaps best known as the husband of Emma Hamilton, famed as Horatio Nelson's mistress. ALS signed “Wm. Hamilton,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 9 x 13.25, November 18, 1769. Handwritten letter from Naples, in part: "After having had many conversations with the Marquis…upon the subject of the Vice Consul's patents I find his Exc'y determined not to grant any exequaturs upon the old forms and I do not think proper to agree to any diminution of our privileges without instructions from my court, for which I have already wrote; in the mean time that nothing may be wanting on our pars & that it His Brittanick Majesty's Consul at Messina may not be defrauded of his rights, you will direct the Vice Consuls to continue to act by authority of the old Patents." In fine condition, with a rusty circular paperclip impression to the top and slight loss to one corner.
