Description

TLS, three pages on two sheets, 7 x 10.5, personal letterhead, March 9, 1932. Letter to Agatha Hunter in Arlington, Massachusetts, in part: "This letter is by way of a sign of contrition and apology for my graceless silence since I heard of your illness while on a holiday in Brittany last summer, and again since I received your Christmas remembrance. If I did not know that Polly had written you our sympathy and our news, I should hardly dare to write now. I am ashamed to remind myself how long your wonderful sweets have been like 'the baseless fabric of a dream!' When I opened that box Christmas, I felt that you had heaped hot coals, as the phrase is, on my head, and I had a crushing sense of your goodness. But if I had written then, it would have been an un-Christmasy letter. We three were deeply submerged by anxiety. Polly was in hospital, recovering from an operation for appendicitis. Teacher could not see to read or shop or do anything festive, even if we had felt inclined to celebrate. The our two dogs were lost, Darky, the Scotch terrier, four says, and Helga, the Dane, eight days. We were very lonely and horribly bewildered and discouraged. However, after the holiday season had passed, we began to emerge from our particular depression. Polly came back and recuperated with remarkable rapidity. The two dogs were found, and work began again. Polly and I have been on the jump since January, going from one meeting to another for the blind." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, with the return address written in Polly Thomson's hand.
