Description

On mid-19th century wine trade: "When the hotels are forced to sell good red wine at one shilling a pint bottle, or two shillings the quart bottle, then there will be a large consumption in this country"

Influential British statesman (1804-1865) associated with John Bright in the formation of the Anti-Corn Law League; an immensely important figure in classical-liberal thought in economics and international affairs. ALS signed “Ric. Cobden,” one page, 5.5 x 8.25, March 16, 1865. Handwritten letter to "Mr. Troupel," in part: "I am glad to hear that the trade in wine is increasing with this Country, but it is a bagatelle as yet. There will be no great increase until some steps are taken, from your side, to insure the supply of good wholesome genuine wine at a moderate price. When the hotels are forced to sell good red wine at one shilling a pint bottle, or two shillings the quart bottle, then there will be a large consumption in this country, but not till then." In fine condition.
