Description

British archaeologist and Egyptologist (1874-1939) whose discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun in Egypt's 'Valley of the Kings' proved to be one of the signal events in the history of archaeology. Manuscript DS in Arabic, signed “Howard Carter,” one page, 8.25 x 7.75, October 4, 1901. Untranslated document concerning the Inspector of Dendera. In very good to fine condition, with light soiling, two file holes, and two tiny pin holes. Accompanied by an original press photo of Carter, stamp-dated 1924 on the reverse. At this time, Carter was serving as Chief Inspector of Antiquities for Upper Egypt; while supervising excavations in the Valley of the Kings in 1902, he discovered the tombs of Hatshepsut and Thutmose IV. About fifty miles north of Luxor, Dendera is home to perhaps the most well preserved temple complex in all of Egypt.
