Description

Revolutionary War officer who served as an aide-de-camp to Benedict Arnold, a justice of the New York Court of Appeals, and an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court (1757-1823). ALS signed “B: Livingston,” one page, 7.75 x 9.5, June 6, 1822. Letter to Oliver Kane, in part: "I am served with a subpoena out of chancery in a suit in which you are one of the plaintiffs & as Mr. Jones informs me, the only one in interests. If the object of the bill be, as it is said to get rid of any claim which may be supposed to have any property mortgaged by either of your brothers John or James to you or to any other person antecedent to the judgment which is supposed to give me this claim, I am ready, in order to prevent unnecessary expense, to release to you all my claims on such property on your preparing & sending me an instrument to that effect." Addressed on the integral leaf in Livingston's hand. In very good to fine condition, with two small paper remnants to the left edge, and splitting to the folds and hinge.
