Description

Prince Phillip braves Maleficent's nightmarish castle in Sleeping Beauty

(Walt Disney Studios, 1959) Brilliant original concept storyboard painting by Eyvind Earle for Sleeping Beauty, portraying the brave Prince Phillip, armed with sword and shield and clad in his knight armor and cape, stalking the ruinous husk of Maleficent's castle during the film’s climax. The scene is fraught with atmosphere and elements of darkness and danger, in particular the unnerving flight of three red-eyed creatures soaring above the tortured arches and demented, vine-choked bulwark. Accomplished in gouache on 15 x 6.5 artist's board, with Earle signing prominently in blue paint in the lower right corner. The work is affixed to a slightly larger backing mount. In fine condition, with tack holes to corners. Disney artist Eyvind Earle was Sleeping Beauty's production designer, and Disney gave him a significant amount of freedom in designing the settings and selecting colors for the film. Earle also painted the majority of the backgrounds himself, and his stylistic influence is readily apparent in the final product.
