Signed book: Bob Dylan Approximately: A Portrait of the Jewish Poet in Search of God. NY: David McKay Company, 1975. Softcover, 7.25 x 10, 208 pages. Desirably signed on the opening page in pencil by Dylan, who adds a quote above: "'I’m trying to be like the medium at a seance. There’s a mystery, magic, truth, and the bible in great folk music.'" Additionally, on the inside back cover, Dylan has added in black ink: "Difference between painting and illustration / All great paintings contained mystery, magic, universal truth, and religion. The difference between good art and great art." In fine condition, with light wear to the covers and creasing to the spine. Dylan's appreciation for art extends beyond the spoken and written word; while recuperating from a motorcycle crash in the mid-to-late 1960s, Dylan began to draw and paint with regularity, ultimately becoming an accomplished painter.
The first quote can be attributed to a Michael Iachetta interview with Dylan in the October 20, 1963 issue of The New York Daily News, which contained the headline and subhead: 'Music with a Message: Today's angry young men don't make speeches—they buy guitars and become folk singers." Dylan's full quote from the article: 'I’m tryin’ to be like the medium at a seance. There’s a mystery, magic, truth, and the Bible in great folk music. I can’t hope to touch that. But I’m goin’ to try.'
