Description

ALS as first lady, signed “Pat & Co.,” one page, 6.25 x 9.5, White House letterhead, no date. Letter to Rex Scouten, in part: "From the photographs you can see how much the pandas enjoyed the Christmas wreaths which you ‘fashioned.’ To their heartfelt gratitude, I add mine! All of us thank you for the peanut brittle treat at Christmas also ‘fashioned’ by you and we are wondering if there are any hidden talents yet uncovered?" In very fine condition.

Scouten’s association with the Nixon family began in 1953 when, as a Secret Service agent he was assigned to protect Vice President Richard Nixon, traveling with him to 42 countries over the next four years. From 1957-69 he was Asst. Chief Usher at the White House. He coordinated the funeral arrangements for JFK. When Nixon became President he appointed Scouten Chief Usher, a position he held continuously until 1986. He oversaw the state dinner on the White House lawn for 1,400 in honor of returning Vietnam POWs. When Nixon resigned in 1974, he packed the Nixon family bags. After he retired in early 1986 Nancy Reagan coaxed him to come out of retirement to serve as White House Curator, a position he held until 1997.
