Brazilian lawyer and politician (born 1882) who served as Brazil’s president during two periods: from 1930 to 1945, and from 1951 until his suicide in 1954. Vargas led Brazil for 18 years, the longest of any president. Manuscript DS in Portuguese, one page both sides, 8.5 x 10.75, May 31, 1938. Official letter to Cuban President Federico Laredo Brú, in part (loosely translated): “I received from the hands of Mr. Alfonso Hernandez the letter by which Your Excellency accredited it in the character of Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary with the government of the United States of Brazil. Very grateful to the desire expressed by Your Excellency and which corresponds to my most cordial feelings of maintaining and strengthening the relationships of good friendship that, happily, exist between our countries, I am pleased to assure you that Mr. Hernandez Cata will find on my part and that of my Government's greatest commitment to contributing to the success of its honorable mission. I take this opportunity to present Your Excellency, with the wishes that I make for Your personal happiness and for the prosperity of the Cuban Republic.” Signed at the conclusion by Getúlio Vargas as President of Brazil. In very good to fine condition, with trimmed edges, three file holes, and some staining and paperclip impressions to the first page.
