John F. W. Herschel

This lot has closed

Estimate: $500+

British mathematician, astronomer, and inventor (1792-1871) known for his discoveries related to the moons of Saturn and Uranus and for his pioneering work in early photographic processes, including coining the word 'photography' itself. ALS signed “J. F. W. Herschel,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, September 24, 1849. Handwritten letter to Scottish dramatist and poet Joanna Baillie, in part: "I must thank you in all our names Ahalya Baee which has delighted us exceedingly. It is a sweet simply told tale of a jewel of a woman & a Queen, tried sorely both by good and evil…and superior to both trails. I like especially her straitforward directness of character who could 'points of policy with art contest. But ever loved the simple method best'—the wisdom of the serpent & the innocence of the dove. It is very sweetly told and the verse was in harmony with the character you describe. It is delightful to see your poetical powers still so fresh & so fluent & I hope you have another legend yet untold." In fine condition, with old mounting residue along the right edge of the last page.
