James A. Garfield

Signed book: Heroines of History. Auburn: Alden, Beardsley & Co., 1852. Hardcover, 5.75 x 8, 520 pages. Signed on the first free end page in pencil with an ultra-early ownership signature by the 22-year-old Garfield, "J. A. Garfield, Hiram, Aug. 11, 1853." Garfield's personal bookplate, "Inter Folia Fructus, Library of James A. Garfield," is affixed to the front pastedown. Autographic condition: very good, with irregular toning and staining to the signed page. Book condition: VG-/None, with edgewear and rubbing to boards, fraying at spine ends, and some dampstaining to textblock. Garfield attended Hiram College from 1851 to 1854, where he was most interested in the study of Greek and Latin. In 1856, he returned to Hiram as a teacher, and was named the college's president in 1857.
