Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 15.75 x 19.25, February 6, 1858. President Buchanan appoints James A. Hardie as "Captain in the Third Regiment of Artillery in the service of the United States." Signed at the conclusion by Buchanan, and countersigned by Secretary of War John B. Floyd. The light blue War Office seal remains affixed to lower left. In very good to fine condition, with small areas of vellum loss along intersecting folds reinforced with archival tape on the reverse.
