Description

"You made me a little homesick for the Golden West when you described your view of the lake. To tell you the truth I'm always homesick"

TLS as president signed “Ron,” one page, 7 x 10.5, White House letterhead, January 27, 1987. Letter to Dolores M. Ballachino, written on the day that he delivered his sixth State of the Union address. In part: "I'm enjoying a very pleasant recovery and feel fine. But I'm sorry to hear about you. You take care of yourself—that's an Executive Order from the Commander in Chief. There, I guess I took care of that. While I'm at it, tell Paul that order applies to him also. It's time to stop now and then smell the flowers. You made me a little homesick for the Golden West when you described your view of the lake. To tell you the truth I'm always homesick. But you are right on another count, I'm also sick of this fuss the press is raising, which is much ado about very little. I think it's slowing down, and I'll be glad when the Special Counsel I asked for can finally tell us what really happened." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.

Reagan is evidently alluding to the Wedtech scandal, which concerned the award of government contracts to a New York defense contractor; Independent Counsel James C. McKay was appointed to investigate the matter in February 1987. The investigation resulted in the resignation of Attorney General Edwin Meese, though he was not convicted of any wrongdoing.
