Description

Lincoln's sculptor lists poems by Emerson, Tennyson, and Khayyam as his favorites

American sculptor (1850-1931) best known for his monumental historical works, most notably the sculpture that forms the centerpiece of the Lincoln Memorial. TLS signed “Daniel C. French,” one page, 7.75 x 10, personal letterhead, August 27, 1909. Letter to George Leon Varney, in part: "I have so many favorites among the poets that it is difficult for me to choose between them. I think, however, that I am safe in naming the following: Emerson's 'Days,' Tennyson's King Arthur's Farewell to Guinevere in the Poem, 'Guinevere,' 'Rubaiyat' by Omar Khayam [sic], Translation by Fitzgerald. I appreciate the great compliment you pay me in asking me to contribute to this collection, and wish my taste in literary matters were less fallible that [sic] it is." In fine condition.
