Description

Churchill receives the published diaries of the first United States Secretary of Defense

TLS signed “Winston S. Churchill,” one page, 7 x 9, Office of the Prime Minister letterhead, November 27, 1951. Letter to Mrs. James Forrestal, in full: “Thank you so much for sending me a copy of your Husband’s Diaries. I look forward to reading them at the first opportunity, and I am sure they will throw an interesting light on the many problems which we resolved with such model cooperation during the war years.” Churchill adds the correct day to the date in his own hand. Matted and framed. In fine condition, with one punch hole to upper left corner. James Forrestal was the last Cabinet-level United States Secretary of the Navy and the first United States Secretary of Defense, serving under Presidents Roosevelt and Truman. Forrestal’s diaries from 1944 to March 1949 were serialized in the New York Herald Tribune in 1951, and then later published as a 581-page book. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
