Presidents

Uncommon collection of TLSs and DSs from four American presidents. First, a TLS signed “Grover Cleveland,” November 22, 1905, in part: “I am very sorry indeed that I must again decline your invitation to address the Entertainment Club…The fact is I have so much to do and am so perplexed with engagements already made and with others I am importuned to make, that I have found it absolutely necessary to decline the bulk of such invitations.” Second, a TLS signed “Gerald R. Ford,” personal letterhead, June 3, 1982, in part: “My warmest congratulations to the Symphony School of America for a tremendous contribution to the world of music…To answer your question concerning my preference in music…I like musicals. There have been many excellent shows but my all-time favorite, for the music, is still Oklahoma.” Third is a TLS signed “Jimmy Carter,” personal letterhead, March 22, 1984, thanking the addressee for a gift to his bottle collection, adding, “I dug up many of my bottles in south Georgia.” Fourth is a DS signed “James E. Carter, Jr.,” September 6, 1963, confirming receipt of one bale of cotton by Carter’s Bonded Warehouse. Last is a DS as governor signed “G. W. Bush,” April 10, 1995. State of Texas House of Representatives document resolving to “commend Pastor Neal Thomas Jones, Sr., on his exemplary service as a minister.” The second page bears an affixed seal and facsimile signatures of several officials, and Bush signs his approval on the third page in black ballpoint. In overall fine condition, with intersecting folds to the Cleveland letter (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature), trivial soiling to the Ford letter, and expected cancellation stamps and document wear to the Carter receipt. Accompanied by the original mailing envelopes for the Cleveland and Carter letters, the former bearing collector’s ink notations and the latter with a stamped free frank. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
