Description

Eagerly awaiting the fall of David Lloyd George

ALS, one page, 5 x 8, personal letterhead, May 7, 1914. Letter to “Mr. Salisbury.” In part: “I stupidly under rated both the amount of work involved and (as a consequence) the amount of expense involved in the picture. I had imagined both at about half what they actually are. This being so I am inclined to let the matter stand over the present in the hope that the Rise of Prosperity or the fall of Lloyd George or some other cause may justify me presently in indulging in luxuries.” In fine condition, with mild creases and soiling to top, and a few unrelated sketches to reverse. At the time, George was in charge of the nation’s finances as chancellor of the Exchequer; Doyle must have been disappointed to see him take office as prime minister two years later. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
