Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Maryland (1741-1811) and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from 1796 until his death. Partly-printed DS, one page, 6.75 x 7.75, August 17, 1793. As Chief Judge of Maryland, Samuel Chase certifies that Leon Changeur “did repeat and subscribe a Declaration of his Belief in the Christian Religion, and the Oath required by the Act of Assembly of this State, entitled, ‘An Act of Naturalization.'” Signed boldly at the conclusion by Chase. The inside of the document contains a handwritten certification by notary public George P. Keeports, affirming that Chase has signed the document as Chief Judge and bears the notary's ornate embossed seal. In fine condition.
