TLS in French, one page, 8.25 x 10.5, October 22, 1969. Letter to Mrs. Adolphe Juviler, expressing his sincere gratitude for the loan of his work 'En écountant le coq [Listening to the Rooster]' for the 1969 retrospective at the Grand Palais. In part (translated): "It is with much joy that I received your letter-thank you with all my heart for having consented to loan the pictures for the Exhibition of the Grand Palais. You have known me for many years and you know how I have always worried about [having] an important exhibition of my work. Naturally, it means a lot that the pictures that I consider the most important be included in this next exhibition. It will have at the same time the stained glass windows that I did for the Cathedral at Metz as well as the tapestries. I have great hopes that everything together will make a very interesting ensemble. Once again huge thanks on my part to you and to your son for this generous gesture. I hope to have the occasion of seeing you again soon." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
Chagall had previously written to ask Mrs. Juviler to allow one of his most colorful and dramatic works, 'En écountant le coq [Listening to the Rooster],' to be exhibited at the 'Hommage a Marc Chagall,' a retrospective held at the Grand Palais from December 13, 1969–March 8, 1970. The work had been owned by Adolphe A. Juviler, who had previously lent it to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City for inclusion in its 1946 retrospective of Chagall's works.
