Description

Monet, branding himself as lazy, politely refuses an honor, “I have little taste for that and would like to stay tranquil in my little corner”

ALS in French, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, Giverny par Vernon letterhead, March 9, 1920. A handwritten letter in pencil from Claude Monet to a friend, ostensibly Gustave Geffroy, in full: “All my excuses for not having answered earlier your very kind letter that you have sent me but apart from painting I am the laziest man in regards to writing. I was very happy to be able to ask a favor from the artist of the Salon d’ Autumne and I am very touched by your thanks as well as those that were addressed to me from you. Regarding the honor that you are so kind to do me as you probably can guess I decline it. While feeling very honored but I have little taste for that and would like to stay tranquil in my little corner. Please believe me your close friend.” In fine condition.
