Description

Beautiful and scarce ALS in French, signed “Louis,” one page, 6.5 x 8.5, July 21, 1766. Addressed from Compiègne, an intimate handwritten letter from King Louis XV sent to his grandson, in full (translated): “Is it true that the Prince of Brunswick looks like your poor father. I would tend to believe it by the portraits that were sent to me and by everything that has been relayed to me. I still have a heavy cold but it is better since I have taken yogurt for two days and a little bit of theriaque at night. Summer has come back and I have felt more health going on my hunt than I have ever this year. That will be very good for the vineyards. We are both leaving during this week so that my next letter will be sent from Versaille. I kiss you tenderly my dear grandson.” Louis adds a postscript: “We have had yesterday a beautiful ceremony of the ordination that has been done by the Bishop of Soissons in the chapel and there were 29 celebrants.” The reverse of the second integral page retains the original red wax seal. In fine condition. An exquisite handwritten letter from Louis XV, examples of which are very rare, especially those with such a frank tone and directed to a close relative.
