French aristocrat (1626-1696) who is remembered for her letter-writing and is revered in France as one of the great icons of French 17th-century literature. Extremely rare handwritten letter in French from Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, marquise de Sévigne, unsigned, one page, 5.25 x 7.75, no date. Letter sent to Monsieur Duplessis, in part (translated): "Whatever judgment we suppose he may have had on the matter you are kind enough to observe and relay it and to awaken in him the affection he may have for me. It seems to me that this would be most appropriate and you would continue your efforts for this matter…(What would you say of the poor Madam Beobeaujeu who followed her husband from so close) The Marquis arrived two days ago very good looking but the fever has not receded. My daughter is desperate, you know her. She sends you her best regards and I assure you that what I had written to Madame Dignere will be enough and she will not write herself again.” In very good to fine condition, with light toning and foxing, and minor paper loss at the fold intersections. A delightfully scarce letter from Mme de Sévigné, one elevated by the rare mention of her daughter, whose shared correspondence greatly impacted future scribes and the richness of French literature.
