Handwritten letter to her midwife, Helen Rowe, whom she calls “Rowie,” in full: “Thank you for your kind letter about Charles It was all very sudden and luckily all was well in the end—and the appendix is reposing in a revolting heap in a bottle beside his bed! The operation was completely satisfactory and he is already walking across the floor of the ward and making very good progress. Andrew has been to see him several times and has been a very good tonic to the patient! It seems extraordinary that Andrew is already two today, and he is enjoying his birthday thoroughly in a very grown-up way! Thank you again for writing.” In fine condition.
The Queen’s eldest son, Prince Charles, 13, was rushed to Great Ormond Street Hospital and successfully underwent an emergency appendicitis operation on February 12, 1962. He was whisked away from his studies at Cheam School, near Newbury, Berkshire. A trainee at King's College Hospital, London, who later transferred to the Middlesex Hospital for Midwifery, Sister Helen Rowe was Britain’s most famous midwife. Rowe was present for the births of all four of Queen Elizabeth II’s children, as well as for the children of other British elite and royalty.
