Description

Rare three-disc set of working man's anthems promoting "one big Union," signed by Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger

Talking Union by the Almanac Singers three-disc 78 RPM record box set inside the album's front cover in fountain pen by Guthrie, "Here's to the Frontier Book Shop, and one big Union… take it easy—but take it. Almanac Singers, Woody Guthrie," and by Seeger, using his short-lived alias, "Pete Bowers." In very good to fine condition, with scattered light foxing and staining. The three records are included.

Accompanied by a letter of provenance from noted Guthrie collector Barry Ollman, in part: "This is a great, early example of Woody inscribing a very uncommon record to a local record shop. The Union reference and his classic sign off, 'Take it easy—but take it,' make it even better. Fellow Almanac Singer Pete Seeger signed it as well, using his short lived alias, Pete Bowers, making this quite unusual. Pete didn't want to embarrass his father politically, as the elder Seeger was then working for the federal government."

The Almanac Singers were a New York City-based folk music group active from about 1940 to 1943, and included folk icons Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger as primary members. The three-disc set 'Talking Union,' released in 1941, dedicated to the memory of labor activist/songwriter Joe Hill, is an enduring collection of working man's anthems that have been passed down through generations of laborers. In 2010, it was selected by the Library of Congress as an addition to the National Recording Registry, which selects recordings annually that are 'culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.' A significant and desirable piece of folk music history.
