Description

Hendrix headlines the Northern California Folk-Rock Festival

Two rare items related to the Jimi Hendrix Experience and the 2nd Annual Northern California Folk-Rock Festival held at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds in San Jose, California, on May 23-25, 1969—an original (not a reprint) program for the 2nd Annual Northern California Folk-Rock Festival, 8.5 x 11.5, 20 pages, which features an opening letter from KROQ-FM program director Rick Carroll, and terrific images of the scheduled performers: the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Jefferson Airplane, The Chambers Brothers, Eric Burdon, Canned Heat, Steve Miller, Chuck Berry, and more; and an original ticket stub for the festival, 2.25 x 2, issued for Saturday, May 24th in “Section E.” In overall fine condition, with light handling wear. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks.

Radio station KSJO reported that acts on the bill—Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, in particular—were not going to appear and were booked elsewhere. Some in the know said it was Peter Grant, Led Zeppelin’s manager, who started the rumor in an attempt to squeeze some more money from Bob Blodgett, the festival's promoter. Grant’s plan backfired, with the promoter retaliating and paying the Jimi Hendrix Experience $30,000—an unheard-of amount of money at the time.
