Description

Lord Kelvin weighs in on "the effect of the earth's rotation on the apparent path of a projectile"

British mathematical physicist and engineer (1824-1907) who, as the Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow for 53 years, did important work in the mathematical analysis of electricity and formulation of the first and second laws of thermodynamics, and did much to unify the emerging discipline of physics in its modern form. He received the Royal Society's Copley Medal in 1883, was its President between 1890-1895, and in 1892 was the first British scientist to be elevated to the House of Lords. ALS signed “Kelvin,” one page, 5 x 8, The University, Glasgow letterhead, December 1, 1896. Interesting letter responding to an inquiry about "the effect of the earth's rotation on the apparent path of a projectile." In part: "The chief cause of the deviation to the right hand is probably due to the resistance of the air causing an elongated projectile to tend to turn its length perpendicular to the line of motion and the effect of the rotation of the projectile upon this tendency. The question is on the whole difficult & complicated." In fine condition.
