Founder and lead guitarist (1946-1971) of the Allman Brothers Band who was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident at age 24, shortly after the release of the band's seminal live album At Fillmore East. Business check drawn on the general account of The Allman Bros. Band, 8 x 3, filled out in the hand of their road manager, Twiggs Lyndon, and signed by Allman, "Duane Allman," payable to Berry Oakley for $175, March 30, 1970. Also endorsed on the reverse in black ballpoint by the Allman Bros. bassist, "Berry Oakley." Below Oakley's signature, Lyndon writes: "For Deposit Only, The Allman Bros. Brand." Lyndon also notates the memo field on the front, "Rent on New House," which became the band's home in Macon, Georgia. Known as the 'Big House,' the band and their families occupied the 18-room mansion from 1970 to 1973; today, it is home to the Allman Brothers Band Museum. Nicely corner-mounted, matted, and framed to an overall size of 15.5 x 10.5, with a glass backing for viewing the reverse. In very good to fine condition, with light overall creasing.
Accompanied by a letter of provenance, in part: "This item was purchased by myself directly from William Perkins, of Macon, Georgia, who succeeded Twiggs Lyndon as the Road Manager for the Allman Brothers Band in 1970. This check is one of very few authentic Allman Brothers pieces that include both the signatures of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley on the same item."
