Description

American Revolutionary leader from New York (1733-1797) who was a signatory of the Continental Association and the Articles of Confederation. Among his many posts, Duane served as a delegate to the Second Continental Congress and the Congress of the Confederation, as a New York state senator, the 44th Mayor of New York City, and the 1st post-colonial Mayor of New York City. Partly-printed DS, signed “Jas. Duane,” one page, 7.5 x 6.5, March 26, 1789. Document regarding the issuance of a "Licence to keep an Inn or Tavern for retailing strong Liquors in his Dwelling House," under the promise that he not "permit any Cock-fighting, Gaming or playing with Cards or Dice, or keep any Billiard Table." In very good to fine condition, with minor loss along the edges, and splitting to the central horizontal fold.
