Civil War-era currency headed "Grand St. & Newtown Railroad Check, Farmers & Citizens Bank of L.I.," with engraved vignette of a horse-drawn carriage, dated at Brooklyn, October 15, 1862. The text reads: "Pay bearer FIVE CENTS in current funds when like checks are presented to amount of ONE DOLLAR No. 1133.” Printer stated as: “Harvey & Kennard, 112 William St. N.Y.” The Grand Street and Newtown Railroad was a street railway company in the state of New York. The company operated two lines—the Grand Street Line from Williamsburg to Elmhurst and the Meeker Avenue Line from Williamsburg to West Maspeth. The company was chartered in 1859. An exemplar of this rare item is preserved by Harvard University, Baker Library, Harvard Business School.
