Description

Scarce screw-bound U.S. military publication entitled “Capabilities of Atomic Weapons (U),” 8.25 x 10.5, prepared by the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project for the Departments of the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force, November 1957 (revised edition), marked “Confidential” on the covers and throughout the entirety of the report, which is composed of two major sections related to the effects of an atomic bomb detonation: Part One: Physical Phenomena, which contains various sections and chapters for ‘Types of Burst,’ ‘Air Blast Phenomena,’ ‘Ground Shock and Cratering Phenomena,’ ‘Water Shock and Surface Phenomena,’ ‘Thermal Radiation Phenomena,’ and ‘Nuclear Radiation Phenomena’; and Part Two: Damage Criteria, featuring chapters/sections for ‘Personnel Casualties,’ ‘Damage to Structures,’ ‘Damage to Naval Equipment,’ ‘Damage to Aircraft,’ ‘Damage to Military Field Equipment,’ ‘Forest Stands,’ and ‘Miscellaneous Radiation Damage Criteria.’ The report includes two detailed appendixes and over 150 figures, graphs, and tables measuring aspects such as crater profile, wave weight, gamma radiation doses, and environmental damage. Front cover bears handwritten notations, an “NAA-LAD, R&D Library” stamp, and a “Dept. of the Army” label numbered “Copy #65.” In very good to fine condition, with scattered creasing and wear to covers, partially affecting first and last pages.
