Description

Impressive trapunto embroidered banner from the late 19th-century / early 20th-century, 28.5 x 24, featuring a black silk background with raised layered designs of a large Bald Eagle with open wings over a patriotic shield, six tasseled American flags, and a blue banner with "E. Pluribus Unum.” Mounted and framed to an overall size of 32.5 x 27.5. In fine condition, with light wear and tear to edges.

‘Trapunto’ is an Italian word that refers to a method of stitching where the fabric is ‘stuffed’ with a padded layer beneath and then embroidered with beautiful heavy-couching stitches on the top to create an image of very high relief. These banners were popular souvenirs for sailors in the Far East and this particular example is thought to derive from China. An appealing display piece boasting fine stitch work and bold patriotic colors.
