Description

TLS as president, one page, 6.75 x 8.75, White House letterhead, January 17, 1969. Letter to William B. Camp, Currency Comptroller at the Treasury Department, in part: “The confidence that I had in you when I appointed you Comptroller of the Currency has been more than justified by the fine work you have done…I believe it is vital that we assure capable and dedicated career officials that they will be able to advance to positions of great responsibility in the Government.” In very good to fine condition, with small tape stains to each edge, and toning from prior display.

On March 31, 1968, Lyndon B. Johnson appeared on national television and announced that he was partially halting the U.S. bombing of Vietnam, and that he had decided not to seek his party’s nomination for president. 'There is division in the American house now,' Johnson declared. LBJ remained true to his word, seemingly half due to the divided state of American politics and the other half due to personal health reasons; in 1967, an actuarial study accurately predicted he would die at 64, almost exactly four years—or another full presidential term—after he wrote this letter. A poignant and grateful letter from a departing president.
