Description

Niels Bohr forwards literature on "the proper energy of the electron" and "the nuclear photoeffect" to a fellow Nobel Prize winner

TLS signed “Niels Bohr,” one page, 8.5 x 11, Universitetets Institut for Teoretisk Fysik letterhead, February 1, 1938. Letter to Nobel Prize-winning physicist Jean Baptiste Perrin, in part: "Today I allow me to send you enclosed a small note about the proper energy of the electron written by Drs. A. Mercier and T. Gustafson in Copenhagen and Lund respectively, which I hope could be published in 'Comptes Rendus.' As I do not know about the formalities I should be very much obliged if you kindly would take care of it and perhaps also look through the proofs of it, if necessary. I take also the opportunity to enclose a small note about the nuclear photoeffect, which I have just sent to 'Nature' and which may interest you in connection with our discussions in Paris and Bologna. It gives, I think, a simple explanation of the apparent contrast between the nuclear reactions initiated by collisions and by radiation, and I should be very glad some time to learn what you think about it." In fine condition.

Bohr received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922 for his foundational contributions to the understanding of atomic structure and quantum theory. His correspondent, Jean Baptiste Perrin, was awarded the 1926 Nobel Prize in Physics for his studies of the Brownian motion of particles suspended in liquids, which confirmed the atomic nature of matter.
