Description

Cleveland builds his coalition before the 1892 election, pledging that supporters of past opponents are "to be greeted and trusted as democrats whose assistance in the campaign is heartily welcomed"

TLS, one page, 7.75 x 10, Gray Gables letterhead, July 19, 1892. Letter to A. C. Kaufman, president of the Vanderbilt Benevolent Association, in part: "I am glad to hear that the action of the Chicago convention was so thoroughly and heartily endorsed at the meeting of your association. Your personal friendliness leads to my belief that your satisfaction on that occasion is not in the least overstated in your letter. You are quite right in your ideas as to the manner in which those should be treated who differed from you and my other friends previous to the Chicago convention, as to the expediency of my nomination. All who show any disposition to acquiesce in the action taken at Chicago ought certainly without any regard to their previous opinions, to be greeted and trusted as democrats whose assistance in the campaign is heartily welcomed. Hoping that your State will not be led by delusion away from the support which she has habitually given to the party of her choice." In fine condition. Cleveland had been nominated for president at the Democratic National Convention in July, and would go on to win the election in November—becoming the only US president to serve non-consecutive terms.
