Description

Early letter from President Truman—"You make me more homesick than ever for the Senate"

World War II-dated TLS as president signed “Harry,” one page, 7 x 9, White House letterhead, May 11, 1945. Letter to Arizona Senator Ernest McFarland, in full: "It certainly was thoughtful of you and the gang to send me a note of congratulations. You make me more homesick than ever for the Senate. Wish I could be with you every day, but it is a physical impossibility now.” In fine condition. Encapsulated in a PSA/DNA authentication holder.

An early letter from Truman less than a month into his presidency. Truman called his first year 'a year of decisions' as his first two months in office were overseeing the end of the war in Europe. In his domestic policies, he sought to accomplish the difficult transition from a war to a peace economy without plunging the nation into recession, and he hoped to extend New Deal social programs to include more government protection and services and to reach more people. Truman was successful in achieving a healthy peacetime economy, but only a few of his social program proposals became law. The Congress, which was much more Republican in its membership during his presidency than it had been during Franklin Roosevelt's, did not usually share Truman's desire to build on the legacy of the New Deal.
