Description

Queen of Sweden and Norway from 1844 to 1859 as the wife of King Oscar I, known for her political activism and involvement in government affairs; her influence is credited for the passage of laws concerning equality between men and women, prison reform, religious freedom, and other social reforms. ALS in French, signed “Josephine,” one page both sides, 5.25 x 8, September 26, 1860. Untranslated handwritten letter from Drottningholm by Josephine of Leuchtenberg, written in the year after her husband's death. In fine condition. Accompanied by an unsigned engraved portrait.
