Description

On the Tet Offensive: "We, the military, knew the enemy was poised to strike but the American public was caught by surprise"

Two items: a TLS, signed “W. C. Westmoreland,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, February 20, 1995, in full: “If I could live again my days before the enemy’s Tet Offensive, I would have shared with the American public our intelligence which foretold the enemy’s massive military offensive. We, the military, knew the enemy was poised to strike but the American public was caught by surprise. In retrospect, I should have publicly made known our knowledge. In that case, public awareness was more important than enemy awareness of our knowledge of the enemy’s plans”; and a first edition of The Tet Offensive, hardcover with dust jacket, published by Gallery Books in 1988, signed on the first free end page in blue felt tip, “W. C. Westmoreland,” and in black ballpoint by Thomas Hinman Moorer, an admiral and naval aviator in the United States Navy (1912-2004) who served as the chief of Naval Operations from 1967 to 1970, and as the seventh chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1970 to 1974. In overall very good to fine condition, with noticeable wear to the dust jacket and some toning to signed book page.
