Description

Relic swatch of the fabric skin of the USS Akron (ZRS-4) US Navy airship, 4 x 2.25, signed in ink by its three survivors: Lieutenant Commander Herbert V. Wiley, Boatswain's Mate Second Class Richard E. Deal, and Aviation Metalsmith Second Class Moody E. Erwin. The swatch bears an embossed seal of Lakewood Township, N.J. Includes a glossy 5.25 x 4 photo of the airship and an informational sheet. In fine condition. The accident-prone naval airship was lost in a weather-related accident off the coast of New Jersey on April 4, 1933, killing 73 of the 76 crew and passengers on board.
