ANS signed “JM,” accomplished in red artist's pencil on an 8.5 x 11 sheet, no date but circa 1968. Handwritten note on Vietnam War-era politics by the legendary Jim Morrison, in full: "Goldwater & Johnson eat shit." Initialed at the conclusion by Morrison, "JM," and by his friend and traveling companion Alain Ronay, "AR." In very good to fine condition, with overall creasing, intersecting folds, and an old tape stain to the top edge.
Accompanied by a detailed letter of provenance from Ronay, in part: "From the first time we crossed the border and thereafter, Jim Morrison and I had an enduring passion for Tijuana, Mexico. When people questioned our taste for the raunchy town, Jim would say that we were 'looking for the evidence'…On one such visit in about 1968, we ran into two young American soldiers on the infamous Avenida Revolucion who recognized Jim and who wanted to buy him a beer. They took us to their favorite dive bar, The Blue Note. The GIs were so proud of themselves for having nabbed a true rock star that they insisted Jim go sing with the local Mexican band playing onstage—which he did—but the kicker was none of them even knew who had just joined them!…One of these soldiers was angry that he had been recruited under pressure when Lyndon Johnson won his election against Barry Goldwater in 1964. Jim pulled out a notepad (he always carried one around with him) and on the spurt of the moment wrote 'Goldwater & Johnson eat shit.' He initialed it and then I did, too, in agreement. Later that night, I stuck the note in my bag and it made it back home with me to Los Angeles…I'm glad I saved it as it's a brief glimpse into that tumultuous yet dynamic era." Also includes an additional letter of authenticity signed by Ronay.
Alain Ronay was regarded as one of Jim's closest and most respected friends amongst their peers. They met during film school at UCLA and remained close friends up until Morrison's death in Paris. Alain was with Jim Morrison and Pam Courson in France during the last months of Jim's life and took some of the last known photographs of Morrison. Ronay helped to arrange Morrison's burial in Père Lachaise Cemetery and was one of the six people to attend his funeral. Ronay's collection of Doors artifacts and memorabilia—which included a rare inscribed copy of Morrison's poetry book The New Creatures and an RIAA award, along with this handwritten note—was auctioned by Julien's in May 2020.
