American lawyer (1841-1882) who, frustrated in his attempt to secure an ambassadorship, assassinated President James Garfield in 1881. Scarce 4.25 x 6.5 cabinet photo of President Garfield's assassin, taken by Charles M. Bell of Washington, signed on the mount in ink, "Charles Guiteau," and signed and inscribed on the reverse, "To John McCullough, With Compliments of Charles Guiteau, U.S. Jail, Washington, D.C., Feb. 11, 1882." A caption printed on the reverse indicates that the photo was taken in the jail on February, 6, 1882. In very good to fine condition, with light soiling, and tack holes to the top and bottom edges. Guiteau was executed on June 30, 1882, in the District of Columbia, just two days before the first anniversary of the shooting. Encapsulated in a PSA/DNA authentication holder.
