Description

French writer and poet (1896-1966) best known as the founder of Surrealism. ALS in French, one page, 8.25 x 10.75, La Revolution Surrealiste letterhead, March 20, 1926. Handwritten letter to the Dada writer Pierre de Massot, penned on desirable letterhead from the Surrealist publication 'La Révolution surréaliste.' In part (translated): "Would you be so kind as to postpone one or two days our appointment tonight? I am afraid I could not be free during the end of the evening. I hope you will accept to come Monday or Tuesday to read 'Étienne Marcel' to me. You know that I very much desire to see you more often, if that does not bother you. Please respectfully salute your friend on my behalf and trust my affection." In fine condition, with creasing to the top and bottom edges.

Breton and Massot had developed an unlikely friendship, as Breton had dealt violent blow to Massot with his walking stick during a “Cœur à barbe” (“Bearded Heart”) evening show in 1923, breaking the writer's arm. That evening is now considered as marking the rupture between the Dada and Surrealism movements. Nevertheless, two years later, Massot was one of the signatories of Breton's 'La révolution d'abord' manifesto and became close to the Surrealists. Shortly after releasing the first Surrealist Manifesto, André Breton published the inaugural issue of La Révolution surréaliste on December 1, 1924.
