Description

American ex-pat socialite (1862-1941) convicted and sentenced to death in England for the murder of her husband, cotton merchant James Maybrick, by arsenic poisoning. The case became something of a cause célèbre and attracted considerable newspaper coverage on both sides of the Atlantic. Maybrick was known as a regular user of arsenic, which was regarded by some as an aphrodisiac or tonic, and Florence had little to gain from his death. In January 1904, after spending nearly 15 years in prison, Florence was released and returned to the United States to live as a recluse. ALS signed “Florence Elizabeth Maybrick,” one page, 8 x 10, Bel Air letterhead, November 9, 1904. Handwritten letter to "Mr. May," in full: "Many thanks for your kind words of sympathy." In fine condition, with intersecting folds and a rusty circular paperclip impression to the top edge.
