Description

British polymath (1794-1866) who made contributions to theology, philosophy, poetry, architecture, mechanics, physics, geology, astronomy, and economics. He is also remembered for coining several new terms—including 'scientist,' 'physicist,' 'linguistics,' and 'astigmatism,' among others. TLS signed “W. Whewell,” one page both sides, 7 x 8.75, December 18, 1827. Form letter sent to "my Pupils who were at the Commemoration Dinner, December 18, 1827," addressing their inappropriate behavior. In part: "Noises, such as none but a crowd which had lost all self-constraint and self-respect will tolerate, seemed to excite no indignation among you: and to be frequent in the proportion of the chance of avoiding detection: and I am sure that some must be conscious of behaviour towards persons above them in College relations, which would be considered rude and disrespectful to any. Such things no excuse can justify; and least of all, any purpose of obtaining an indulgence which last year led to lamentable and intolerable uproar. Your good opinion of one another, and the value added by it to your college distinctions, I shall always think of the very highest importance." In very good to fine condition, with central vertical and horizontal folds, a few small splits to folds, a rusty paperclip mark to the last paragraph, and toning to the top.
