Description

English statesman (1732-1818) who became the first de facto Governor-General of India from 1773 to 1785. He was accused of corruption and impeached in 1787, but after a long trial he was acquitted in 1795. ALS, one page both sides, 7.75 x 9.75, June 14, 1812. Handwritten letter addressed from Daylesford House, in part: “Seeing no chance of my going to town during this summer, I shall be so much obliged to you if, whenever you have given the intended improvements to the Portrait of the Duke of Gloucester, you will have the goodness to order it to be packed in the same package in which it went, and to send it by Ward’s waggon.” Matted and framed with an engraved portrait bearing a facsimile signature to an overall size of 12.5 x 15; the matting is calligraphically inscribed to "Edward Bennett Williams Esquire, In Appreciation from the Philadelphia Bar Association, 1967," and a window to frame backing reveals the first page of the letter. In fine condition.
