ALS, one page, 4.5 x 7, May 30, 1856. Addressed from New York, a handwritten letter to New Hampshire Congressman Mason Weare Tappan, in full: "I hope yet to see you before you leave. My judgment is that if you can nominate Fremont at Concord easily and without executive prejudice, you ought to do it. Are you looking out for the American Convention that meets here next week?" In very good to fine condition, with two small stains to the top, and light toning and a short tear to the left edge.
The first (ever) national nominating convention for the Republican Party was held from June 17-19, 1856. By this letter, written two weeks before the convention, and likely intended to influence New Hampshire delegates to the convention, Greeley encourages the nomination of Fremont. His hope was realized when the convention nominated former U.S. Senators John C. Fremont for president and William L. Dayton for vice president.
